Brazilian Amazon releases more carbon than it absorbs
A study has revealed that the Brazilian Amazon rainforests between 2010 and 2024 released an average of 1.17 billion tons of carbon dioxide annually more than they absorbed, due to wildfires and deforestation. This threatens their ability to regulate the global climate. Specifically, fires alone released around 1.47 billion tons of carbon each year, while their absorption capacity did not exceed 300 million tons. This reflects a deterioration in the forest's role as a carbon sink, driven by human activity and climate change. The study emphasizes the importance of reducing fires and restoring forests to prevent reaching a tipping point where the Amazon loses its ability to recover. It also confirms that forest degradation worsens global warming and endangers the stability of the global climate.
