Mauritania: Only citizens can change Constitution
The Mauritanian government affirms that only the people have the authority to amend the constitution and denies any attempts by President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani to extend his term or to modify provisions that prevent a third candidacy. It emphasizes that the responsibility for constitutional amendments lies with the people, while committing to adhere to the law. This comes amid widespread political debate, where the opposition strongly calls for rejecting any amendments that might enable the extension of presidential terms, considering that the articles prohibiting candidates from running more than once are currently protected and cannot be altered, even through a popular referendum. The country is preparing for a national dialogue focused on constitutional amendments, with opposition calls insisting on sticking to constitutional principles and rejecting any extension of the presidential term.
