Trump Advocates Renaming a State
In line with his policy of changing geographic names to suit his political agenda, former U.S. President Donald Trump called on the state of New Mexico to change its name to "New America." He claimed—without evidence—that this would help increase home values, household incomes, and improve the state's election reputation, which leans Democratic and is currently recovering from recent election results. Experts see this as an attempt by Trump to rename landmarks and places, as he has the authority to change the names of geographical features like lakes and straits, but he does not have the legal authority to change the names of states. This move has been firmly rejected by local officials, including the state governor and a local senator, who emphasized that the name "New Mexico," which dates back to before the founding of the United States, will remain unchanged.
