French cities impose curfew after riots
French authorities have imposed a curfew in northern French cities on Monday and Tuesday nights following acts of rioting and looting, which included anti-government protests that had been ongoing for weeks. This measure comes amidst increasing security pressures in an effort to restore order after incidents of violence that resulted in property damage and chaos. Although the Prime Minister ruled out a nationwide state of emergency, he indicated that a partial and local curfew is the most suitable solution, with expectations that the measures will be expanded to specific cities without further details. These protests occurred in the context of worsening economic conditions and rising debt, with the government accusing far-left groups of attempting to incite disturbances ahead of the presidential elections scheduled in six months.
