Libyan Unity relies on municipal involvement in UN process
The article focuses on the efforts of the Government of National Unity in western Libya to involve mayors and elected municipal councils in the political process overseen by the United Nations, aiming to expand national participation and achieve broader consensus on laws paving the way for elections and unifying the executive authority. The meeting between government officials and the UN envoy discussed ways to strengthen municipal participation, with references to the importance of supporting women in municipal councils, and ongoing consultations to expand political representation through broad national mechanisms, amid political and military divisions preventing legislative elections since 2014. Despite these challenges, the elected municipal councils remain the only elected bodies in the country and are expected to play a key role in progressing toward political stability, a process that requires overcoming conflicts between competing authorities.
