Tunisians protest high prices and freedoms
Today, Tunisia experienced a large demonstration—the largest in years—protesting the high cost of living and demanding respect for freedoms. Over three thousand people participated, including union members, politicians, lawyers, journalists, and human rights activists. They gathered in Mohammed Ali Square before heading towards Habib Bourguiba Street. The protesters carried signs emphasizing the need for democracy and freedoms. The demonstration was met with strict security measures, with the entrances to the capital closed. These protests come amid an escalating economic crisis, deteriorating essential services, and growing anger towards President Kais Saied, who is accused by protesters of imposing an autocratic rule and failing to address the crises. The opposition is calling for the release of political prisoners, and experts see these protests as reflecting unity among activists and various political factions against repression and criticism directed at Saied.
