Bangladesh Issues Measles Alert
Bangladesh is facing the worst measles outbreak in the world, with 202,000 suspected cases reported from March to October 2023. Of these, 22,000 cases have been confirmed, and 1,147 people have died, most of whom were children under five. The decline in vaccination coverage has led to a rise in cases, as the percentage of immunized children dropped from 96% to around 90%. This has exacerbated the crisis, highlighting weaknesses in the health system—including poor data collection and limited access to populations. Experts emphasize the importance of strengthening routine and organized vaccination campaigns, as they are more effective and less costly than emergency responses. The crisis serves as a warning about declining immunization rates, which expose communities to the risks of outbreaks, evident in rising cases and deaths among children.
