Poisons Smoke Haze Threatens Southeast Asia
The Regional Climate and Fire Monitoring Authority in Southeast Asia announced the activation of the highest alert level (Level 3 of 4) due to the ongoing Indonesian wildfires, which have led to the formation of a toxic haze covering parts of the region. The smoke haze, which has persisted for months, has caused an increase in respiratory issues and the closure of schools in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. Cities such as Singapore and Kuala Lumpur are ranked among the most polluted globally, with dangerously high levels of haze recorded. The region faces forecasts of failure in controlling the fires, and Singapore has warned that the situation could worsen. The issue of the haze will be discussed at the ASEAN leaders' level ahead of the November summit in Manila.
