Japan faces aging crisis with influx of four million foreigners
Japan recorded a record number of foreigners residing in the country, reaching 4.28 million as of June 2026, an increase of 156,000 compared to the end of the previous year. These foreigners make up about 3.5% of the total population. The country faces labor shortages due to a decline in the population by approximately 900,000 annually, which has led the government to increasingly rely on foreign workers. Despite the implementation of stricter new residency regulations, it is expected that the number of foreigners will reach 10 million by the 2040s, even amid anti-immigration sentiments and rising calls for more stringent restrictions.
