Washington urges increase in reserves
The United States is demanding that IEA member countries commit to a new pledge to withdraw at least 100 million additional barrels from emergency oil reserves, due to ongoing diesel supply shortages and rising fuel prices that are impacting transportation costs, production, and inflation. This request differs from the collective drawdown plan approved by the council in March 2026, which aimed to release 400 million barrels from reserves, expedite withdrawals, and allocate more than 20 million barrels of diesel to the markets. So far, member countries have not officially approved the request or identified which nations will contribute or the timeline for the releases.
