Rise in lethal injection failures
The article focused on the failure of lethal injection executions in the United States, and the increasing instances of individuals surviving during execution procedures, particularly in Tennessee. It explained that a shortage of proper drugs, restrictions on their use, and behaviors of compounding pharmacies producing the medications have led to a rise in errors, reaching about 8% since 2010. It also noted that the original protocol involving three drugs to induce death relied on high-risk substances, and that restrictions imposed have resulted in drug shortages and the development of alternatives. However, some cases still experience stoppages or failures, prompting other states to turn to alternative methods such as shooting and oxygen deprivation, due to their inability to carry out humane and reliable executions.
