Austria starts school hijab ban
Austria is beginning to implement the hijab ban in schools, which came into effect in September 2026, aiming to promote equality and protect Muslim girls from discrimination. The law has faced widespread protests and objections from Muslim families and girls, with critics arguing that it unfairly targets Muslims and infringes on religious freedom. Since its enforcement started, 127 interviews have been conducted with parents, authorities have reported 52 violations, and the opposition has organized protests. Reports confirm that most girls wish to wear the hijab voluntarily, and most discussions typically lead to positive outcomes, though the law’s application varies across regions, especially in Vienna. The Constitutional Court expects to issue its final ruling on the case in the first half of 2027.
