Turbulent Week Challenges Erdoğan
Turkey experienced a tumultuous week marked by numerous crises. Heavy rains in Istanbul caused widespread floods, resulting in 1,277 incidents and 15 landslides. Authorities responded by closing schools and suspending motorcycle traffic, while emergency teams handled over 2,500 reports. In a repressive move, police raided the headquarters of the opposition "Khalq TV" channel and temporarily suspended its broadcast as part of investigations related to corruption allegations, drawing criticism from opposition parties and human rights organizations. Tensions also escalated between Turkey and Azerbaijan following protests against new dress code restrictions in schools, which effectively amounted to a ban on headscarves. Additionally, Turkey faced a significant investment crisis after liquidating 131 investment funds managed by companies. Confidence in the economic landscape waned amid rising investor demands amid inflation and the weakening lira.
