Cancer diagnosis raises questions for Pope Leo XIV and Vatican
Pope Leo XIV announced that he has lung cancer and underwent surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung, with the operation being successful in the early stages of the disease. This unexpected diagnosis changes the Vatican's calculations, raising questions about his upcoming travel schedule, the future of the papacy, and his role in leading the Church—especially as concerns grow over the possibility of a scenario like Pope Francis's health deterioration. Although it is too early to determine how this illness will impact his role, it may add a human dimension to his personality and influence the Vatican’s image, at a time when internal and external challenges are increasing.
