UN Reports Global Poverty Rise to 1.2B
The number of people affected by multidimensional poverty worldwide has risen to approximately 1.2 billion for the first time since 2010, an increase of 51.5 million people. Population growth is one of the contributing factors, accounting for about 15.4 million of this increase. Multidimensional poverty includes lack of food, education, clean water, and electricity. The report shows that more than half of those affected are children. Despite the efforts of some African countries that successfully halved poverty levels over 15 years, the overall rise serves as a global warning of the need to address the underlying causes and challenges that have led to this increase.
