Spain seeks cooperation from King’s visit to Ceuta and Melilla
King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia's visit to the cities of Ceuta and Melilla aims to reaffirm Spanish sovereignty over them, and to carry out an official institutional position that expresses Spain's commitment to both territories despite the ongoing dispute with Morocco, which claims sovereignty over them. The visit includes meetings with local authorities and humanitarian programs to reinforce the symbolism of sovereignty. It also comes after the summer migration crisis and is built upon internal and external messages supporting the continuity of the relationship with Morocco, despite existing tensions. The announcement seeks to reassure the Spanish public and demonstrate that the two cities are part of Spanish sovereignty, while also attempting to normalize relations with Morocco, which considers them occupied territories. A potential Moroccan reaction is anticipated, possibly ranging from protest and escalation to strategic silence.
