Pakistan heats up as Imran Khan's supporters rally
Political tensions in Pakistan have escalated as supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan have taken to the streets again, in protests that reflect deep divisions between the opposition and the government. Khan's followers are rallying in Islamabad to demand his release, with the possibility of further escalation involving legal measures against leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf movement or reaching an understanding to prevent the situation from reaching the capital. Analysts warn that turning the protests into attacks on state institutions could complicate the crisis further, and that a political solution and dialogue remain the preferred options to contain the escalation.
