Iran Uses New Tactics Against Unveiled Women
The Iranian authorities continue to intensify social and economic pressures on women who do not adhere to the mandatory veiling rules, following the failure of efforts to fully enforce surveillance since the "Women, Life, Freedom" protests that began in September 2022 after the death of young Mahsa Amini. These pressures have expanded to include workplaces and shops, with online campaigns calling for support of businesses that comply with the hijab requirement and boycotting those that do not. This behavior aims to redraw social boundaries and reaffirm ideological control, as women who refuse to wear the hijab face economic sanctions and social restrictions, deepening divisions and threatening further fragmentation of Iran's social fabric.
