Casualties in northern Sudan airstrike
Reports have circulated about unidentified fighter jets targeting artisanal gold mining areas in northern Sudan near the Egyptian border, resulting in dozens of deaths and injuries and causing panic among miners, according to unofficial sources and activists. The Jabal Al-Akodat and Al-Ahmar mountains are among the most important sites for artisanal gold mining in Sudan, producing approximately 60 tons annually and employing millions. Artisanal mining accounts for about 80% of the country's total gold production. The Sudanese authorities have not issued an official statement; however, the "Tasis" coalition, led by the Rapid Support Forces and opposition groups, accused Egypt of carrying out the strikes and called for an independent international investigation.
