Rising Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz has witnessed a rise in maritime tensions over the past 48 hours, with at least three targeted incidents recorded. Two of these involved oil tankers, while an unidentified vessel was also targeted with projectiles of unknown origin. The United States announced that it intercepted a vessel violating the naval blockade imposed on Iran, while the Iranian Revolutionary Guard confirmed targeting two oil and gas tankers as they attempted to pass through illegal routes. This reflects an escalation in attacks on ships. Tensions in the strait are increasing as Iran continues to target vessels, with the weekly number of attacks reaching its highest level since the start of the war against Iran in February 2023, highlighting the rising risks to vital oil and gas shipments that are crucial to the region’s economies.
