India protests lead to Cockroaches leader's release
Under the pressure of widespread protests, an Indian court released Abhijit Deppki, the founder of the "Cockroach" movement, along with two senior leaders, after their detention during demonstrations demanding the resignation of Election Commission Chairman Gyanesh Kumar due to disagreements over the review of voter lists. Delhi witnessed powerful protests involving thousands of demonstrators, with over 2,000 people arrested in an attempt to curb the movement, while the police faced widespread criticism for their excessive use of force. The protests call for Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation and accuse the government of trying to manipulate the electoral process, while the Election Commission insists that the deletions are only targeting individuals who have been non-resident for a long time. However, the opposition accuses the moves of harming minorities and Muslims.
