Washington targets ICC over rule of law
The United States has implemented sanctions against the International Criminal Court, rejecting its threats to Americans and viewing them as an assault on the rule of law. The sanctions came in response to two arrest warrants issued by the court against Israeli officials on charges of committing war crimes in the Gaza Strip, specifically against Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant. The measures include freezing the court’s assets within the United States and banning Americans from engaging in financial transactions with it without permits. The court responded to the sanctions by deeming them an attack on justice and called for defending its work. This move comes amid escalating American pressure since the issuance of the arrest warrants and attempts to protect Israeli officials from the court’s prosecution, even though the United States and Israel are not members of the court’s founding treaty.
