Russia cautions on NATO buildup in Lithuania
Russia considers the deployment of additional NATO forces, including American troops, in the Baltic states—particularly in Lithuania—a serious escalation of the situation. This move is part of a broader effort to strengthen Western deterrence against Russia and to encircle the Kaliningrad region, cutting off its access to the Baltic Sea. Lithuania has announced its readiness to establish a permanent American military base in the country, pending approval from Washington. However, the parliamentary vote to lift the constitutional ban on deploying nuclear weapons increases the risks of escalation between Russia and NATO, especially as Germany continues deploying an army battalion in Lithuania comprising 5,000 soldiers and civilians, in a broader effort to expand NATO's military presence in the region.
