Maduro's wife seeks U.S. prison release over health risks
Cilia Flores, the wife of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, is seeking to be released from jail in New York and to be granted house arrest due to health issues related to her heart, with expectations of filing a request before the court today, Thursday. The detainees face criminal charges that could result in life imprisonment, along with the possibility of new charges against officials for torturing American citizens in Venezuela during Maduro's rule. The allegations include claims of torture and mistreatment of more than a dozen American nationals, amid accusations from the U.S. government and human rights organizations that the detainees are being used as political bargaining chips. The investigation reviews cases of torture and ill-treatment, involving officials from security ministries and prison authorities in Venezuela, with international reports highlighting widespread human rights violations.
