Brazilian students protest Bolsonaro
Thousands of Brazilian students protested in Rio de Janeiro against the possible victory of Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who topped the first round of elections. The protesters expressed their concern over cuts to social spending, the rule of law, and democratic rights, especially amid declining funding for universities and research grants. They also voiced fears of amnesty for Bolsonaro's incarcerated father and the potential return of Bolsonaro himself to power, which could threaten their democratic rights. In the first round results, Bolsonaro Jr. is leading by two million votes, while the two main candidates prepare for a runoff in October. The protesters emphasized the importance of defending sovereignty and democracy in the face of right-wing tendencies.
