Bohemian Queen Painting Sells for $1.35M
A mysterious oil painting by surrealist artist Gertrude Abercrombie was sold at auction for over $1.35 million, far exceeding its estimated value of only $150,000 to $250,000. The painting, dating back to 1951 and signed by her, depicts a collection of ten seashells, a recurring motif in Abercrombie's work, who was known as the "Queen of the Bohemians" in American art. The piece is considered one of her rare works, as she never sold it during her lifetime, and it was once donated to a doctor in exchange for medical services. It reappeared about 75 years later in a home in Michigan. After restoration, its value was significantly elevated, achieving record-breaking auction results that exceeded expectations, highlighting the artist's symbolic use of seashells as elements representing friendship.
