Pacific nations warn of worsening climate crisis
The participation in the Pacific Climate Conference focused on the urgent need for governments to intensify their efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Data indicate that the Earth's temperature is rapidly surpassing the 1.5°C target above pre-industrial levels, leading to rising sea levels and an increase in extreme weather events. Member states emphasize the importance of securing better funding to combat climate change, protect the oceans, and adhere to the goal of limiting temperature rise to this threshold, despite expectations that this limit will soon be exceeded. Fiji's Minister of Climate highlighted that natural phenomena are already impacting communities, with degraded landscapes and threatened villages emerging, reflecting the critical need for urgent action.
