WHO probes employee death at Russian plague lab
The World Health Organization confirmed that it is still unable to determine the exact cause of death of a staff member at the plague research institute in Russia. It pointed out that tests did not reveal the presence of hazardous infectious agents. Russian authorities announced that the death was due to pneumonia caused by a severe viral infection, unrelated to pneumonic plague. The organization has requested Moscow to provide additional information. Meanwhile, Russian authorities have taken preventive measures, including contact tracing and laboratory testing, which showed no recent cases of plague in the area.
