North Korea leader congratulates Putin on birthday
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his firm support for Russia in its war against Ukraine, describing the conflict as a "sacred justice." This statement was made in a congratulatory message on Russian President Vladimir Putin's birthday, in which he expressed confidence that the war will inevitably end with Russia's victory and voiced their desire to develop bilateral relations. Since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, North Korea has become a major ally of Moscow, dispatching forces to support military efforts in exchange for economic benefits and military technology. Estimates suggest that Pyongyang has sent between 14,000 and 15,000 soldiers since 2024. Relations between North Korea and Russia have notably strengthened, especially since the signing of the joint defense agreement in June 2024. These developments come amid tensions between South Korea and Ukraine, following Kyiv's revelation of North Korean troops' transfer, and Pyongyang's criticism of the United States regarding arms sales to Taiwan and its military support for the island. Meanwhile, the international community faces escalating tensions between Beijing and Washington over Taiwan.
