Seoul Considers Limiting Athlete Military Exemptions
South Korea has highlighted a plan to reduce and abolish the military exemption system for athletes, following a wave of public criticism after football players who won gold medals at the Asian Games celebrated their achievements, including team captain Lee Gye-hyeok and Park Seong-soo. Officials, including the ministers of sports and defense, aim to make the system more equitable and enforce stricter standards, with the goal of gradually reducing exemptions or eliminating them entirely, due to the escalating controversy over the unfair advantage gained from this exemption.
