Jeddah Transformed by a Young Girl
The painting "Girl of Jeddah" by artist Makhled Habib focuses on envisioning the Saudi city through the perspective of a young woman representing a new generation of Saudi women. It blends Jeddah's diverse heritage with its future aspirations. The artwork features elements of Saudi and Hejazi culture, such as the Hejazi "rwashn" (traditional heritage), lanterns, handicrafts, and books—particularly a book by Gazi Al-Gosaibi, symbolizing women's connection to their heritage and their ambitions for the future. The piece reflects the city's balance between its past and its adaptation to modern life, depicting Jeddah through the sea, palm trees, and the modern city skyline, emphasizing that the image is intertwined with the social and cultural transformations taking place in the kingdom. Habib employed various techniques and vibrant colors to create a work that conveys messages of hope and progress for Saudi women, capturing the interaction between inherited identity and future horizons.
