Israel faces growing mental health issues after three years
Israel is currently facing an unprecedented mental health crisis since the October 7, 2023 attack, which resulted in the death of around 1,200 people and the kidnapping of approximately 250 hostages by Hamas and allied factions. About 39% of Israelis (roughly three million people) are suffering from symptoms of PTSD, depression, or anxiety, with around 600,000 experiencing severe cases, despite a limited increase in mental health treatment. Healthcare workers are under immense pressure, with studies showing that 84% of them exhibit symptoms of psychological trauma, compounded by staff shortages and treatment delays exceeding six months, driving many to resort to sedatives and alcohol. There has also been a rise in suicide among reservists, with cases increasing from a maximum of one annually before the war to 11 in 2024, and nine cases currently under investigation in 2025. Experts emphasize the urgent need for greater support for the mental health system, encouraging open discussions about mental health and reducing stigma, especially among fighters who are considered the most vulnerable.
