Indian police arrest opposition MPs including Rahul Gandhi
Opposition Members of Parliament in India, including Rahul Gandhi and his sister Priyanka, staged a protest in New Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protest was fueled by disagreements and divisions within the Election Commission over changes to the voter lists. Police arrested some MPs as they attempted to breach security barriers, and security measures were heightened around the Commission headquarters amid widespread protests involving opposition parties and youth movements. These protests come in response to allegations that the lists were manipulated to favor Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party. The Indian Supreme Court agreed to hear cases related to the conduct of the Election Commission and the voter registration process, amid growing concerns about the impartiality of the electoral process.
