Germany ex-intelligence chief detained
German authorities have signed off on the detention of former Federal Intelligence Service chief August Hanning, on charges of espionage and high treason. Investigations indicated that he provided confidential information in exchange for money during his tenure from 1998 to 2005. Additionally, another former official, Manfred D., who was his chief of staff, has been detained on charges of aiding in treason and espionage. Prosecutors accuse both of attempting to obtain state secrets and collaborating with external parties, supporting secret agreements after 2010. It is noted that the investigation focuses on Hanning’s use of his position to gather confidential information and distribute it for financial gain, with the intent of using it in private consulting activities. The two will be brought before the judiciary to decide on their detention, as part of an extensive investigation into security breaches.
