Egypt and Ethiopia diplomatic tensions over Renaissance Dam
A diplomatic escalation between Egypt and Ethiopia manifests through both countries expelling each other's diplomats, amidst heightened tensions centered on the ongoing dispute over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which has persisted for more than a decade. Cairo announced that an Ethiopian diplomat has become persona non grata and has been given 48 hours to leave Egypt, in response to a similar move by Addis Ababa, which did not specify the reasons for the expulsion. Analysis highlights that Egypt aims to reach an agreement on the dam’s filling, while Ethiopia accuses Egypt and other countries of interfering in its affairs. Ethiopia affirms that its decision was made without evidence of Cairo's interference, and Addis Ababa views these actions as the culmination of long-standing tensions over Nile River resources, with Ethiopia seeking to safeguard its developmental projects amid Egyptian pressures.
