Ex-FAO official contests firing over Gaza hunger stance
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is facing an internal crisis following the dismissal of its former director, Benjamin Davis, who believed that his termination was linked to his stance on malnutrition and hunger in Gaza. Davis, who worked for the organization for 26 years, has filed an appeal against his dismissal, asserting that he was fired for expressing his opinions on human rights issues and the humanitarian situation in Gaza—including participating in silent protests in solidarity with the victims of hunger in the region. The decision to dismiss him, along with accusations of violating neutrality standards, has sparked a debate over the freedom of expression for UN staff. His colleagues gathered in support of him, amid concerns about the possibility of other retaliatory measures. The case has now been referred to the organization’s internal justice mechanisms for review.
