Israeli president pardons soldier involved in West Bank incident
Israel was compelled to issue a presidential pardon to former soldier Eilor Azariya, who killed a Palestinian named Abdul Fattah Sharif in 2016 after he attacked Israeli soldiers in Hebron and shot him in the head. The soldier justified his action by claiming he believed Sharif was wearing a bomb belt, a claim denied by the court. The incident sparked widespread debate within Israel, with some viewing his justification as valid and others criticizing it. President Isaac Herzog, on the occasion of Yom Kippur, decided to erase Azariya’s criminal record based on the remorse he expressed, despite opposition from the military. The Minister of National Security considered that the pardon sends a positive message, while supporters of the case argued that the decision raises questions about rules of engagement and responsibility.
