Reports indicate that Russia and China used their veto rights to block a draft resolution aimed at extending the mandate of the independent monitoring mechanism for international sanctions against Iran. This has resulted in the termination of the mandate that oversees violations of sanctions on Tehran. All United Nations sanctions on Iran were re-imposed a year ago due to allegations of violating the 2015 nuclear deal, which Iran denies aiming to develop nuclear weapons. The independent expert committee, responsible for monitoring violations and reporting to the council, ceased its activities last year due to disagreements over its appointment. The United States condemned the absence of independent monitoring, stating that it damages the council’s credibility and serves the interests of the Iranian regime. Conversely, Russia and China called for a political and diplomatic solution to the crisis, viewing Western measures as politicizing the council and escalating tensions in the region.
