The study focused on the ongoing and sudden increase in seismic activity at North Korea's Punggye-ri nuclear test site since 2017, especially after the most powerful nuclear test, which had an estimated yield of around 160 kilotons. Data shows that seismic activity has significantly and steadily risen since then, with approximately 1,399 earthquakes recorded in the area, most of which are weak and occur at shallow depths. This suggests a long-term impact of those tests on the Earth's crust. Scientists believe that the continuous seismic activity is due to ancient faults within the tectonic plate, and that the explosions have stimulated activity along these faults, complicating monitoring efforts at nuclear sites and increasing the risk of prolonged earthquakes. The exact mechanisms remain unclear, but the study confirms that nuclear tests have long-term repercussions on seismic activity in the region, raising concerns about the site's safety and the potential for ongoing geological changes for years to come.
