Protecting Appliances After French Cyberattack
Hundreds of major stores in France fell victim to a cyberattack targeting their cooling systems, leading to system disruptions and the spoilage of large quantities of fresh and frozen products. This attack highlights the increasing risks associated with hacking smart household devices, whose numbers are growing and are valued at around 163 billion dollars in 2023, with projections reaching 278 billion dollars by 2034. Hacking into household appliances poses a greater threat than traditional breaches, as hackers can use them as entry points into the home network, jeopardizing personal data security and other connected devices. Security reports recommend protecting the home network by using WPA2/WPA3 protocols, segmenting the network into separate subnetworks for household devices, enabling two-factor authentication, and upgrading routers to provide additional protection against cyberattacks. These measures aim to reduce the risk of breaches and safeguard smart devices from the escalating digital threats.
