Britain and Israel over Jerusalem consulate renaming
The British government announced the closure of its consulate in East Jerusalem, paving the way for relocating its activities to a new building dubbed "The British Mission in Jerusalem," while maintaining a limited diplomatic presence of only seven diplomats. This move came after Israel requested the closure of the consulate and the withdrawal of its diplomats, amid a diplomatic escalation related to the UK's stance on Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Both sides emphasized the continuation of dialogue and avoiding retaliatory measures, while Britain threatened to expel Israeli diplomats if the consulate were to be permanently closed. Previously, the British National Security Advisor visited Israel in an attempt to prevent further escalation. The consulate was established in 1839 and represents the British government in the Palestinian territories. This step follows mutual escalation and diplomatic tensions between London and Tel Aviv.
