Vinícius Júnior’s performance for Real Madrid has dipped this season: he has scored once and provided three assists in 12 matches, while his dribbling attempts have fallen to one every 21.6 minutes, compared with one every 9.5 minutes in the 2022–23 season. The decline has been linked to his movement overlapping with Kylian Mbappé’s on the left, changes to his tactical role and increased defensive responsibilities, as well as a crisis of confidence and competition from Ivorian player Yan Diomandé, who scored four goals in 22 days. Vinícius’s changed appearance and form have fueled rumors that he disappeared and was replaced by a lookalike, but the claims were not supported by credible evidence. Real Madrid denied reports that he had undergone a DNA test. Coach José Mourinho believes the player is going through a difficult spell but is continuing to look for ways to help him regain his form, without guaranteeing him a starting place.
