New Zealand police have dropped the rape charge against Ryan Mendes, captain of the Cape Verde national team and a player for Renaissance Berkane, after a months-long investigation found that an allegation of assault at a hotel in Auckland last March could not be substantiated. A 40-year-old woman has meanwhile been charged with making a false statement and is expected to appear in court next week. Mendes’s lawyer said the 36-year-old was pleased to put the case behind him and viewed the developments as a complete vindication.
