Barcelona investigates World Cup referee over Egypt-Argentina incident
Debate erupted over the decision to review the penalty in the match between Barcelona and Real Betis in La Liga, after the goal scored by Real Betis midfielder Giovani Lo Celso in the first half was canceled on the grounds that the ball had touched the hand of a player in midfield before the goal was scored. The decision sparked objections from Real Betis and their coach, especially since the handball incident occurred well before the goal, and could have been overturned according to a TV analysis that confirmed the review should be based on the extent to which ball possession changed. It is worth noting that a similar controversy arose 100 days ago in the Egypt vs. Argentina match at the 2026 World Cup, when the referee disallowed an Egypt goal due to an alleged error at the start of the attack, despite protests from Egypt and their coach, with assurances that in that case, the play should have been allowed to continue.
