Syrian League Starts with Suma's Return
Today, the 56th edition of the Syrian football league kicked off with 14 teams participating. Each club is permitted to sign four foreign players. Veteran striker Omar Al Soma returns to domestic competitions after a 15-year absence since leaving Al Fatah in 2011. The clubs of Al Ittihad Aleppo, Al Karamah, and Al Homs Fadya are leading the contenders for the title, amid expectations that teams such as Al Wehda, the Army, the Police, and Al Ittihad Damascus will also compete strongly. The regulations have increased the number of foreign players to around 70, most of whom are from Africa, notably Senegal, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Ghana. Al Soma's return to the league with Al Wehda Damascus for a two-season stint is a major event for the tournament, given his prolific scoring record with clubs in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait. Fans hope he will contribute to positive results for his team this season.
