Messi's farewell causes upset in England
Lionel Messi's farewell ceremony after the end of his international career with Argentina sparked a wave of political and national debate due to its coincidence with the Falklands Islands issue. Fans and event organizers engaged with the sovereignty dispute over the islands, which have been under British control since 1833, while Argentina considers them part of its territory. During a friendly match against Benin, banners and flags appeared stating "Falklands are Argentine," highlighting Argentina's claim to reclaim the islands. This controversy was intensified especially after Argentina's victory in the World Cup against England, adding political tension to Messi's final appearance, during which he appeared visibly emotional.
