How a fake account sparked a key Premier League case
The article addresses Manchester City and its involvement in violating the principles of fair play financially. Investigations revealed that the club concealed over $1.05 billion in disguised funding over the years through structured business transactions and false documentation, along with leaks over several years exposing detailed information about sponsorship deals and bonuses. The crisis began with a cyber breach in 2017, which led to the leakage of internal files and provided evidence of financial manipulation, eventually escalating into official charges in 2020 by the English Premier League. These charges involved suspicious funding, withholding financial disclosures, and details about enhancing revenue through bribes and contract modifications. While the club maintains its innocence and claims that these are legal errors, the court has convicted the club after years of investigation and legal confrontations, bringing forth substantial evidence and documentation. This development threatens to alter the club’s history and significantly impact its financial trajectory.
