Experts warn rodents cross borders amid environmental disruption
The article discusses the phenomenon of rat proliferation in areas adjacent to the Gaza Strip, emphasizing that the war and widespread destruction have led to significant environmental disruptions, which in turn have altered the patterns of rat presence and reproduction. It clarifies that the phenomenon is not limited to rat infestations but involves complex environmental changes, including habitat destruction, accumulation of waste, damage to water and sewage networks, and population displacement, all of which create a suitable environment for the spread and breeding of rodents. Experts also pointed out that the increase in field rodents, such as jirds, is due to changes in agricultural and environmental systems. Their presence causes agricultural and economic damage, along with health risks related to food and water contamination and a higher likelihood of disease transmission. The importance of implementing integrated pest management programs was emphasized, along with the need for careful study of environmental causes and not relying solely on pesticides. Continuous monitoring is essential to promote public and environmental health in the region.
