Britain's police data at risk from foreign hacking
The Guardian newspaper revealed that massive amounts of sensitive data belonging to the British police are stored on Microsoft cloud platforms, including criminal records, victim testimonies, and internal correspondence related to more than 40 police stations across the UK. A police document indicates that some of these files are classified as "Secret" or "Top Secret." The decision to rely on Microsoft Azure for storing this data was made in 2017, with some officers aware of the risks posed by potential access to this information by foreign or domestic entities within or outside the US government, which could lead to serious security breaches. Despite official reassurances that foreign or American governments cannot access the data unauthorizedly, security experts warn that these risks remain and that the information could be vulnerable to hacking. Such breaches could compromise the privacy and security of sensitive data, potentially causing severe harm or even loss of life if it falls into irresponsible hands.
