Roman sarcophagus at Westminster identified
An expert has identified the skeleton inside a Roman sarcophagus unearthed near Westminster Abbey as likely belonging to a medieval abbot from the late 10th or early 11th century. The sarcophagus, dating to the late Roman period, was found to contain remains consistent with a man aged 35-49, and evidence suggests the body was covered in powdered lime before burial. The archaeologist believes the most probable identity is Abbot Ælfwig, who died around 1020, based on the dating and associated religious symbols.
